Three underground tunnels in the Plymouth area of the United Kingdom reportedly with a rich history of wartime use including the Napoleonic wars, are up for auction.

The chambers originally date back to the days when the town of Devonport was surrounded by a moat.

Where there are now arches, there was once the footing of a drawbridge.

After they were drained, the recessed areas became a pathway for the transport of soldiers, both injured and dead, in an effort to keep the town from witnessing the horrors of the battles.

It’s also said that they were a means of transporting French prisoners without posing significant risk to the townspeople.

In the decades following the drained moat was converted to a tunnel system.

About a century later they were again used for the benefit of the area’s citizens, but that time as a shelter against World War II bombing raids.

It was after that the tunnels came into the ownership of the Tapper family, who purchased them from the government.

As the current generation of property holders doesn’t have use for them, they’re up for auction.

The starting price for the chambers, which are described as storage property, is listed at 30 thousand dollars.
