A 39-year-old Hong Kong woman surnamed Zheng was arrested for forcibly aborting her 27-week-old fetus in Hong Kong. The mother of four and grandmother of one found herself pregnant earlier this year. She was sick of having babies and felt that her family could not care for another one properly given their financial situation, so she opted to abort the fetus.

Zheng obtained abortion-inducing drugs from an Indonesian woman and took the pills for an entire week before giving birth to the baby boy at her home on Wednesday night around 9pm. The baby boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Doctors said the drug that was used to abort the fetus is commonly used to treat gastric ulcers and that swallowing 10 pills of can easily cause an abortion.

The woman was arrested for aborting a fetus older than 24 weeks.

A Hong Kong obstetrician told the Apple Daily that aborting a fetus over the age of 24 weeks may cause the mother to die from excessive blood loss.
