Several killed, dozens trapped after Latvia supermarket collapse

Four people were killed and dozens more were feared trapped after the roof of a busy supermarket in Latvia's capital Riga collapsed on Thursday evening, a rescue official said.

TV pictures showed the Maxima grocery store surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances with rescue workers using their hands and crow-bars to pull away rubble from inside the single storey, modern building.

"Around 30 people are injured, there are four people dead, including one rescue service worker," rescue service spokeswoman Inga Vetere said.

The cause of the collapse was not known, but local media said workers had been building a roof garden on the store.

Ambulance service spokeswoman Ilze Buksa, said 27 people had been injured and 22 of those had been taken to hospital.

"There might be more injured, but we can't give an estimate as rescue works are ongoing," she said.
