Many clothing factories in the country of Bangladesh that are used by Walmart stores have failed safety inspections.

One out of six factories couldn’t pass the inspections that used basic standards for fire and electrical, as well as structural safety.

The factories that didn’t meet standards were reportedly closed down until repairs or renovations could be finished.

Worker safety in Bangladesh came under the spotlight after the disaster in April of this year that killed 11 hundred factory workers when the Rana Plaza building collapsed.

Theresa Haas, from the United States based Worker Rights Consortium, is critical of the inspections saying: “Walmart's reports are superficial at best. They contain no detailed information whatsoever about the results of the inspections or the remediation that has supposedly been carried out and there is no mention of the need to inform workers about risks that have been identified in their workplace.”

There is an international factory improvement accord that addressed fire and building safety issues in Bangladesh that Walmart has rejected and won‘t sign.

But Walmart announced that they still want to work with the accord and spent 4 million dollars on the inspections along with worker safety training.
