Former NFL linebacker Thomas Howard was killed early on Monday morning in a horror high-speed car accident in Oakland, California which also claimed the life of an innocent motorist.

The accident occurred just before 1 a.m. on Interstate 880, south of Fifth Avenue. Police believe Howard, 30, was speeding his BMW 750Li in excess of 100 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the back of a semi-trailer.

The impact launched the car over the center median barrier causing it to strike an oncoming Chevrolet Monte Carlo before slamming into a grey Honda CR-V.

Police found the wrecked BMW overturned on the southbound right lane. The Honda was found blocking the two left lanes, its driver dead inside.

The driver of the Honda has been identified as 64-year-old Zeng Long Liu, of Hayward.

The veteran linebacker played parts of eight NFL seasons before the being cut by the Atlanta Falcons last week.
