Dozens trapped in South Africa shopping mall collapse

Rescue teams worked late into the night combing through broken concrete slabs and twisted bits of metal.

At least one person was killed and up to 50 people were trapped when a section of a shopping mall under construction near the South African city of Durban caved in.

More than two dozen others, some in critical condition, were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Tuesday night, large crowds watched anxiously as sniffer dogs looked for survivors in debris.

One official said local authorities had tried to stop construction of the three-story structure a month ago.

Durban's Deputy Mayor spoke to reporters.
