23 dead in Beirut blasts

At least 23 people are dead after twin blasts targeting the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut.

The cultural attache at the Iranian embassy is amongst those who were killed.

Officials say some 146 people were wounded.

Lebanon's Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil condemned the blasts.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) CARETAKER HEALTH MINISTER, ALI HASSAN KHALIL, SAYING:

"This can be fully described as an act of terrorism, it is a criminal and reprehensible act which targeted the lives of civilians. It is just one of the acts of terrorism that have been hitting the region which Lebanon is part of."

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosions were the latest in a string of bomb attacks in Lebanon, which has fallen prey to Shi'ite-Sunni sectarian violence linked to the two-and-half-year conflict in Syria.
