A roadside bomb in Thailand's Pattani province detonated Tuesday, destroying a military armoured vehicle on patrol in Thung Yang Dang district.

According to Thai news reports, several soldiers were injured when the bomb exploded. Unidentified gunmen then opened fire at them.

Thai authorities did not release exact information about casualties sustained in what they are calling a terrorist attack.

The bomb was reported as containing 20 kilograms of explosives and was hidden near a bridge. It was detonated remotely.

The injured soldiers were members of a No. 25 Pattani special task force.

Muslim separatists in southern Thailand have been linked to a slew of roadside bombing and attacks against government forces in Southern and Eastern parts of Thailand. Attacks have increased in sophistication and frequency since 2004.
