Africa Union troops step up patrols in Mogadishu as additional troops arrive

STORY: Soldiers from the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) say they are consolidating security in the capital to enable civilians to go about normal life.
The commander of the Uganda contingent AMISOM troops, Brigadier-General Dick Olum, said on Friday (November 15) they were able to conduct patrols round the clock.
Recently the U.N. Security Council authorised an increase of more than 4,000 peacekeepers in Somalia so the U.N.-backed African force can boost its fight against al Shabaab militants who have shifted tactics and expanded their reach.
The additional 4,400 troops will bring the combined force to about 22,000 troops.
In a letter to the Security Council last month, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the Somali National Army and the AMISOM had assumed a largely defensive, static posture against al-Shabaab due to a lack of troops and equipment, particularly helicopters.
