Plans to build a new hypersonic spy aircraft for the United States military have been announced by Lockheed Martin Corp.

The SR-72 model aircraft will be capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 6, and a missile demonstrating the technology might be in the air by the year 2018 with the actual aircraft operational by 2030.

According to Brad Leland, the head engineer on the project from Lockheed Martin, the SR-72 was designed to be built with basic materials to keep the budget down, but still reach speeds three times faster than most current fighter jets.

Technology used by the aircraft has also contributed to the development of more advanced missiles that might be operational by the year 2020 at only a slightly higher cost than missiles currently used by the US military.

Details about the amount of money already invested in developing the unmanned aircraft or the projected costs of building the SR-72 have not been released.

But Leland says that based on the new technological advancements, with a development cost less than one billion dollars, a twin engine “demonstrator jet” capable of flying to any target in one hour might be possible in the next five or six years.

What do you think about the new military hypersonic jet technology?
