OPCW says Syrian chemical weapons facilities "destroyed"

Syria has destroyed all of its declared chemical weapons production and mixing facilities, according to the international chemical weapons watchdog.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the OPCW, says Syria met its main obligation by Friday’s deadline as part of an ambitious disarmament programme.

The OPCW says its teams have inspected 21 out of 23 chemical weapons sites across the country. The other two are too dangerous to inspect, it reports, but the equipment had already been moved to other inspected sites.

Under a Russian-American brokered deal, Damascus agreed to destroy all its chemical weapons after Washington threatened to use force in response to the killing of hundreds of people in a sarin attack on the outskirts of Damascus in August.

By mid-2014, Syria must also destroy its entire stockpile of chemical weapons.
