Detained Chinese reporter confesses to taking bribes

Chen Yongzhou, an imprisoned Chinese journalist, has confessed to wrongdoing on state TV.

State media said he had admitted writing false stories for money.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) DETAINED REPORTER CHEN YONGZHOU SAYING:

"I definitely hope the entire journalist industry could learn a lesson from me. For myself, if I were given one more chance to be a journalist, I must follow the basis journalistic ethics that are impartial, real, objective and complete to do report and would not be lured by interest."

His case attracted huge attention after his newspaper New Express made front page appeals for his release.

Chen wrote several articles for the Guangdong-based newspaper alleging financial irregularities at a construction equipment company called Zoomlion.

Rights activists say public confessions in China are often forced and violate the accused's right to a fair trial.
