The unicycles that the founders of the company are riding around Chicago were designed by Focus Designs, and are just one of several brands of electric powered self balancing unicycles on the market.
Using gyro sensor technology and accelerometers, the one-wheeled electric vehicle moves in the direction that the driver is leaning.
At a retail cost of around 18 hundred dollars, the electric unicycles can travel at speeds of up to 12 and a half miles per hour.
Commute Connect co-founder Tim Goebel says it usually takes about 30 minutes for new drivers to learn how to operate the unicycle.
One benefit is that it is small enough to carry on public transportation like buses and trains.
Electric unicycles are reportedly more popular in places like Europe and Asia, because of their appeal as a green transportation technology.
They haven’t caught on as much in the United States, but Commute Connect is hoping to change that when they open a sales kiosk in the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago.
