Fire kills nine at Bangladesh garment factory

The fire broke out late Tuesday in the knitting section of this garment factory in Gazipur, near the Bangladesh capital.

At least nine employees of Aswad Composite Mills factory died in the blaze and scores more were injured.

(SOUNDBITE) (Nur Nabi) UNNAMED FACTORY WORKER, SAYING:

"In the evening when fire broke out I came here to search for my uncle who was working in this factory, I have not yet found him. I found out that the fire started from a stander machine, the silencer of the machine exploded, the fire spread and the factory caught fire. Immediately after the fire many people ran out of the factory but a few could not get out."

As firefighters continue to douse the flames of the smouldering rubble questions remain about the cause of the fire.
