Plane crash near Lagos airport kills at least 16

More than a dozen are killed when a passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Nigeria.

The Associated Airlines plane was flying from Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos to Akure, a southwestern town about 140 miles or 225 km away.

Yakubu Doti, the Airports Authority General Manager, says rescue workers responded right away

(SOUNDBITE) (English) YAKUBU DOTI, AIRPORTS AUTHORITY GENERAL MANAGER, SAYING:

" The rescue operation commenced immediately with all the relevant agencies moving in mass to the crash site to rescue victims. And we can confirm to you that five of the victims have already been rushed to the hospital and all the agencies are already on ground to monitor and rescue victims."

The death toll now stands at 16.

Local media is reporting that the plane was carrying a family and the body of a former state governor to his funeral.
