Witnessing a wild animal at a zoo isn’t an uncommon sight. However one recent incident was anything but normal.

A wild bear recently broke into a zoo in Moncton, Canada and sadly, the large animal killed a deer while on the zoo grounds. Authorities at the facility are currently working to determine how the bear got past the perimeters.

Department of Natural Resources officers were forced to put the bear down citing safety reasons. The general manager of the zoo stated “We do find skunks and raccoons who find their way under or over our perimeter fence, but in my 24 years at the zoo, I have never seen a large wild animal enter the facility.”

The zoo is surrounded by a 6.5 foot fence and all enclosures were reportedly built according to industry standards. The deer in question was a Reeves Muntjac, commonly referred to as a barking deer, which is commonly found in southeast Asia.

The bear snuck into the facility at a little before dawn and zoo employees discovered the wild animal on the day of the incident, resting in the deer’s pen.
