Egyptian Farmer Arrested for Naming Donkey After Army General

An Egyptian man was recently arrested for insulting the country's military chief General. The trouble began when the 31-year-old farmer put an army hat on his donkey and called the animal by the General’s name, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

The Egyptian man was recently arrested for insulting the country's military Chief General. The trouble began when the 31-year-old farmer put an army hat on his donkey and called the animal by the General’s name, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
He then rode the donkey through his home village and reportedly acted in a manner that was considered “directly insulting” towards the army.
El-Sisi is responsible for ousting the former president Mohamed Morsi in July of this year following nationwide protests against Morsi. Since then the Egyptian military has concentrated efforts on El-Sisi opponents or residents who make anti-military remarks.
Right before the donkey incident, eight protesters were arrested in another part of Egypt for spraying anti-military graffiti.
Despite the controversy, El-Sisi has his own slew of supporters. His image is on constant display in local store windows, on street walls and cars.
