Amateur video which emerged on Sunday captures the terrifying attack inside Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall, in which at least 68 people had been killed.

Filmed on Saturday inside the popular high-end shopping centre and released by CCTV Africa, the shaky video shows distrought shoppers and employees running through shopping aisles seeking shelter, with the sound of gunshots cleary heard in the background.

The store aisles and checkout area seen in the video resemble the signage of Nakumatt, a supermarket located on the ground floor of the shopping centre.

Islamist militants were holding hostages on Sunday at Westgate shopping mall after an attack by Somalia's al Shabaab group.

Kenyan military spokesman said on Sunday that most of the hostages at the mall had been freed in an ongoing rescue operation, and that the army had taken control of most areas of the shopping mall complex.
