The sixth edition of the Times Green Ganesha (TGG) campaign was launched in the midst of GenNext on Wednesday. The annual drive to promote an environment-friendly Ganeshotsav is propped up by workshops and celebrity endorsements, a beach clean-up programme and an awards function.

On Wednesday, actor Shahid Kapoor joined the students of Lala Lajpat Rai College to encourage Mumbaikars to instal eco-friendly Ganesh idols and adapt green immersion practices. Over 700 Ganpati mandals and 200 housing societies took part in TGG last year. Households that procure idols made from non-toxic material also joined the drive.

The TGG awards were started with a view to encourage environment-friendly practices and inculcate a sense of responsibility among citizens. It felicitates the most eco-friendly Ganesh mandal, housing society and household Ganesha. Entries are judged on the basis of ecofriendly idols, decorations and immersion methods.

This year, too, TGG is inviting readers to nominate their participation in the rewarding exercise. Special idol-making workshops and mandal visits by celebrities are an added attraction.

The annual beach cleanup that takes place the day after Anant Chaturdashi also generates a lot of enthusiasm, particularly among school and college students. Around 1,000 people arrive at Girgaum Chowpatty in the morning and carefully sift through the litter to segregate floral offerings from trash and deposit each separately. The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, the parent body of all Ganesh mandals, supports the cause.

TGG is an initiative by The Times of India along with the ministry of environment, Maharashtra, and the MPCB.
