Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro found hanged in jail

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro, who imprisoned, raped and beat three women in his home for about a decade, has been found hanged in his Ohio prison cell.

Castro was sentenced on August 1 to life plus 1,000 years in prison for the crimes.

The former school bus driver, who was under protective custody and isolated from other inmates, was found dead on Tuesday night.

The 53-year-old was transferred to an area hospital and pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.

Castro was taken into custody in May after the three women he kidnapped - 27-year-old Amanda Berry, 23-year-old Gina DeJesus and 32-year-old Michelle Knight - were freed when neighbours heard Berry's cries for help.

The house where they were imprisoned and tortured was torn down just under a month ago - with Knight present for the demolition.

All three women had vanished without trace between 2002 and 2004, two as teenagers, after Castro lured them into his car with offers of a ride.
