The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick is concerned as baby puffins are wandering into towns. The birds are choosing to take up shelter under parked vehicles.

Drivers in East Lothian have received a warning concerning baby puffins. Puffins are exotic appearing birds that showcase a multi-colored beak. They spend a good portion of their lives at sea, however they return to land during the spring and summer to form breeding colonies.

Scotland is one area known to have an abundance of puffins. However The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick is concerned because the baby puffins are accidently wandering into town after leaving their burrows for the first time.

The birds become disoriented from the lights of the habited areas and commonly seek out dark places. However they’re choosing to take up shelter under parked vehicles.

Motorists have been asked by authorities at the Scottish Seabird Centre to thoroughly check underneath cars before backing up and driving away, hoping the extra effort will save the baby puffins lives. If any are found, residents are urged to call the Seabird Centre or the Scottish SPCA.

Tom Brock, the centre's chief executive, stated “Puffins are wonderful seabirds and an important part of our marine ecology. They are also very popular and an important part of Scotland's growing wildlife tourism economy."
