Huntington Beach white riot breaks out after US Open of Surfing

A wave of violence crashed through California's Huntington Beach on Sunday night after the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing.

As the nine-day surfing event came to an end on Sunday afternoon fights broke out in the street which led to a two-hour confrontation between police and rioters. At least eight people were arrested on suspicion of failing to disperse, said the Huntington Beach Police Department.

It still remains unclear what started the riots, but witnesses said fights broke out after 7pm as a large crowd headed from the beach back across the Pacific Coast Highway.
The street brawls quickly escalated into riots as crowds of youths filled Huntington Beach's downtown Main Street. The crowds damaged city vehicles and street signs. The rioters pulled a stop sign from the ground and threw it through a bicycle shop window. One bicycle was stolen out of the shop, but store workers and random bystanders stopped the looters from taking more. More than a dozen portable toilets were also turned over.

Police responded to the violence and cops from around Orange County were called to Huntington Beach. Police in riot gear used tear gas and nonlethal rounds to disperse the crowd. No serious injuries were reported.

Well, at least rioters are breathing easy, because it's not like there are any pictures on Instagram or Facebook out there. Do you take selfies when committing crimes? Leave some evidence.
