Pet store thieves normally target adorable pets.

However, a man in Virginia was recently caught on surveillance footage stealing a baby alligator.

The male picked up the 3-month-old gator from its tank and brazenly placed the reptile underneath his shirt before walking out of the shop as if nothing had happened. The theft initially went undetected for a little while.

An employee at the store realized the creature was gone in the morning after attempting to feed the gator. When workers pulled the surveillance film, they saw two men.

They recognized one of the males because he is a frequent customer who is said to already own an alligator. That man reportedly distracted an employee inquiring about food and other items, while his unknown friend was clearly seen on the footage swiping the gator.

It is unclear if the regular customer was aware of his buddy's illegal act. According to the pet shop workers, the baby alligator is valued at about $300.

Police are asking the public for help putting names to the suspects’ faces.
