The Newseum in Washington D.C. reportedly laid off 16 of their employees because of budget problems in January 2013.
The Newseum in Washington D.C. reportedly laid off 16 of their employees because of budget problems in January 2013.
It is located across from the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, and has a large variety of exhibits that cover many aspects of news and media history.
Since the museum opened a new building in 2008 that purportedly cost almost twice the original 250 million dollar estimate, they have been struggling financially and were forced to fire 29 full time employees in 2009.
Many museums in Washington D.C. have government funding and their budgets were hit when the economy went into a recession.
Freedom Forum and Newseum CEO James Duff, who was reportedly paid 1 point 6 million dollars in 2011, said that they are currently restructuring their staff.
They recently also announced that they are starting the Newseum Institute that will work with schools and public programs to educate and promote the Newseum’s goal of spreading the message of the First Amendment, including the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.
