At least 42 dead in Cairo shootings

At least 42 people were killed in Cairo when Islamist protesters angered by the military overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi were fired on outside the Cairo military barracks where he is being held.

The Muslim Brotherhood released video footage showing supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi being attacked with teargas outside the Republican Guard prior to the main shooting.

More than 200 were wounded in a sharp escalation of Egypt's political crisis, and Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood urged Egyptians to rise up against the army, which they accuse of orchestrating a military coup to remove the democratically elected leader.
