Household devices keep getting smarter and thanks to some very generous Kickstarter donations, a new light bulb will soon join those ranks.

The smart bulb will respond to smartphone requests for changes in hue and brightness. The company who invented them is opening up the development of additional commands and features to third-party contributors.

One possibility is that it be instructed to blink to notify users of incoming social media alerts and messages.

The beta bulbs are shipping soon and wider distribution is expected to follow quickly.

Its availability is due in large part to its phenomenally successful Kickstarter campaign.

The campaign was launched in September 2012 and the developers were looking for a hundred thousand dollars.

They wound up with over 1.3 million.

Devices that run on smartphone apps seem to be big draws among Kickstarter supporters.

An app controlled, phone-linking watch created by Pebble brought in over 10 million dollars in 2012.

Called the e-paper watch, it can track the mileage of your run and control your music. It also has a wide range of customizable faces.
