Obama says U.S. to cut nuclear weapons deployment

U.S. president Obama says in Berlin that he has detemined that the U.S. can maintain a strong deterrent while reducing its deployed nuclear weapons by up to one third, and that he plans to seek negotiations with Russia to end cold war nuclear postures

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING:

"After a comprehensie review I have determined that we can assure the security of America and our allies, and maintain a strong and crredible strategic deterrent while reducing our deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one third."

He was speaking in front of the Brandenburg Gate which once stood alongside the wall that divided communist East Berlin and the capitalist West.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the event.
