Another life lost in Iraq's deadly turmoil.

At least five people died when two coordinated car bombs detonated minutes apart in the southern city of Basra.

The explosions injured at least 10 others and charred buildings in the city centre.

The second blast killed a police colonel investigating the first explosion which came 10 minutes earlier.

The southern city of Nassiriya was another of several targets Sunday.

Here the car bombings hit popular markets, adding at least two more lives to the country's rapidly rising death toll.

Gunmen also shot dead six policemen at a checkpoint near the northern city of Mosul.

Nearly 2,000 people have been killed in sectarian attacks since violence surged in April.
