U.N. raises death toll in Syria to 93,000

A rising death toll in Syria with the UN now putting the count at 93,000.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, says conditions on the ground are getting worse in a conflict that has already gone on more than two years.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, NAVI PILLAY, SAYING:

"The constant flow of killings continues at shockingly high levels - with more than 5,000 killings documented every month since last July, including a total of just under 27,000 new killings since 1 December.

She also warns that that death toll is likely even higher than the UN findings.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, NAVI PILLAY, SAYING:

"Unfortunately, as the study indicates, this is most likely a minimum casualty figure. The true number of those killed is potentially much higher."

Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows no let up in the fight in Syria.
