Women heckled at Jewish holy site

Anger at Jerusalem's sacred Western Wall.

Ultra-orthodox Jews confront dozens of female activists - and their male supporters - at one of Judaism's most sacred sites.

The 'Women of the Wall' movement seeks equal prayer rights for women at the Western Wall. They regularly gather at the site wearing prayer shawls or reading publicly from the holy scriptures.

Under Orthodox tradition, both actions are reserved for men.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ULTRA ORTHODOX MAN, YISRAEL GADALUSKI, SAYING:

"If you check through the bible, everything you see, it's just doing the opposite, then we come with sadness and we come to fight against it."

Dozens of police formed a cordon to separate the two sides. Violence broke out a similar protest last month.

An activist said she was happy to see a peaceful protest without violence.
