Riot police clash with protesters occupying Istanbul park
  • 11 years ago
Turkish protesters receive minor injuries when a fence collapses as they try to escape riot police.

The authorities moved in to clear a sit-in aimed at protecting this Istanbul park from development.

The demonstrators had been occupying Taksim Gezi park since Tuesday, in a bid to stop plans to build a shopping mall and housing on the site.

They say it is one of the last green spaces left in Turkey's largest city.

But local authorities say that as well as the building plans, they need the space to widen a nearby road and ease traffic in this often congested city.
