Fire destroys Rio fuel depot

A fuel depot caught fire on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, causing multiple explosions as it rapidly spread to nearby homes.

Residents living a few kilometres away from the fuel depot first spotted the fire which consumed at least six tanks of fuel and lubricant.

According to local authorities, firefighters quickly contained the fire to a four block area, by cooling the surrounding area, and believe they will be able to completely extinguish the blaze once it has consumed the burning fuel.

The fuel depot is located in the neighbourhood of Duque de Caxias, located just north of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

It is still unclear how the fire was started.

No injuries or casualties have be reported in the immediate area which was evacuated by local authorities.
